'...Opened in a blaze of glory...an undeniable success' New York Times
The Australian Music Theatre Event of the Year!
Based on Herman Melville’s sprawling 19th century literary masterpiece, Moby Dick is a tremendous seafaring and spiritual adventure that will carry audiences on the massive whaling ship The Pequod from the bustling ports of New England, to the equatorial waters and the distant South Seas.
The opera explores the lethal power of obsession and the need for human connection and understanding in an increasingly multicultural world involving strange encounters, exotic characters and one man’s quest to destroy a white whale that leaves death and destruction in its wake. Captain Ahab’s obsessive quest to find and destroy the whale that bit off his leg in a previous encounter can also be seen as an allegory for all of humanity’s obsessive pursuits.
Starring an international cast, including Jay Morris, Grant Doyle and Jonathan Lemalu, with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the State Opera chorus conducted by Timothy Sexton.
Moby Dick combines Orchestra, chorus, singers and actors in a feast for the senses.
