In Lieu / A Mixed Suite is a Nexus double bill featuring new and traditional Indonesian music and works by a group of talented, highly regarded performers.
The evening will begin with A Mixed Suite, featuring gamelan compositions by David Kotlowy and Teruo Yamasaki, as well as traditional Javanese music played by the popular Gamelan Sekar Laras.
A Mixed Suite will be followed by In Lieu, an exciting collaboration between choreograper / dancer Ade Suharto and composer David Kotlowy, inspired by the artists' recent work abroad. In lieu is the result of a three-week residency (made possible with support from Arts SA) at Nexus Multicultural Arts.
Established artists in their fields of contemporary dance and music respectively, Ade Suharto and David Kotlowy both acknowledge and continue to participate in more traditional forms of their disciplines. They have been performing Javanese repertoire with Gamelan Sekar Laras since WOMADelaide 2003 and have been aware of each other's work through contemporary performance circles. An in-demand composer and musician, David also has extensive experience in Japanese music. In Lieu is partly shaped by their formative yet still current experiences.
In Lieu looks at Ade and David's embodied sense of tradition, with consideration of geographic space and past generations. The work's music, dance and theatrical elements posit a new language as experience by "outsiders" - one that goes beyond the notion of the exotic to present a personal story through a contemporary lens.
The evening's dynamic double bill is shared with Gamelan Sekar Laras, a group that also shares an interest in Indonesian traditions as well as new musical ideas and performance arrangements. This promises to be a powerful evening of old and new musical stories meeting head on at Nexus Cabaret, Adelaide's year-round home of world music and dance.
