Holding The Man

A funny, sad and celebratory account of growing up gay.

Director: Rosalba Clemente

Designer: Morag Cook

Lighting Designer: Mark Shelton

Composer: Stuart Day

Cast: Luke Clayson, Geoff Revell

It's the mid-seventies - and satin baggies and chunky platforms reign supreme. Jethro Tull does battle with glam-rock for the airwaves. At an all-boys Catholic school in Melbourne, Timothy Conigrave falls wildly and sweetly in love with the captain of the football team. So begins a relationship that will last 15 years, a love affair that weathers disapproval, separation and ultimately death.

Holding the man recreates that relationship with honesty and insight: the intimacy, constraints, temptations and the strength of heart both partners may need. This multi-award winning play explores the highs and lows of a remarkable partnership that speaks across generations, sexual preferences and cultures.

This play is a memoir by Australian writer/actor/activitist Timothy Conigrave.

"When Adam offered me Holding the ma to direct, I was in tears," says Director Rosalba Clemente.

"I knew Tim Conigrave, who was a year ahead of me in the NIDA acting course - a brilliant man who died all to young. The play has captivated the hearts of audiences right around the world. It is a celebration of Tim - angry, hilarious, vibrating with intelligence and full of passion for his life and his art. It is also a beautiful love story and a night to fall in love with ... a night to remember Tim by."
