The MoFo scholarship offers places for disadvantaged members of our community to attend Urban Myth workshops free of charge. We accept nominations from community organisations that know a young person who would benefit from joining Urban Myth but may not have the opportunity without assistance.

City of Unley

The City of Unley Scholarship Program started in 2005, when Unley Council provided funding to assist disadvantaged young people living in the Unley area to attend Urban Myth workshops free of charge. As part of the scholarship, it is specified that the young person must be new to the company, aged between 12 and 25 and from the Unley council area.

Jul 19th : ShoGo speaks to Appalling Behaviour's Stephen House! ShoGo

ShoGo was lucky enough to talk to Stephen House, the director and performer behind Bakehouse's Theatre's Appalling Behaviour, which tackles the issue of homelessness.

Stephen is no stranger to travelling overseas and exploring other worlds for his artistic pursuits.

One experience in particular inspired him to highlight the often invisible world of homeless people.

"A homeless person once said to me, no-one hears me, it is like I speak another language," he said.

"This really stuck in my mind and made me want to draw attention to this marginalisation.

"I like telling the underdog story, or stories that are not always told."

For a month in the winter of 2005, Stephen rented a cheap room in Le Marais, Paris, spending most of his time just observing people on the streets or handing out with them and hearing their stories.

"We often have one-dimensional images of homeless people, but what I discovered is that homelessness was just one condition or part of their life, and not necessarily the defining one," he said.

"Homeless people are just like you and me: they laugh and cry and sleep and eat and have the same needs as anyone else."

The character Stephen portrays in Appalling Behaviour is not meant to represent all homeless people, but a very specific person.

"There are complexities around the character's homelessness, complexities such as his wandering lifestyle, his fragile mental condition, his drug and alcohol abuse, and him in general just being a very vulnerable human being."

Stephen said that while these are dominant issues that he has come across while exploring homelessness, he is not intending to imply that all homeless people experience these exact conditions or in the exact same way.

He just wanted to give life to a fully-fleshed character.

Stephen is looking forward to returing to the Bakehouse Theatre after sellout season for Miss Blossom Callahan and Borrowed Time.

"I love working there, because of the incredible access to audience to performance possible in smaller venues."

See ShoGo's What's On page for more information about Appalling Behaviour.

Jul 13th : The Vitals Book, Zine & Crafty Affair Vitalstatistix Theatre Company

The best things in life are second hand bargains…

Vitalstatistix Theatre Company knows how to put smiles on dials in the depths of winter, and The Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair is an event full of everything one could want on a chilly Sunday. A mountain of second hand books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, cool art and craft stalls, a gourmet sausage sizzle, great coffee, cakes and a flowing bar in the beautiful, heritage listed Waterside Workers Hall in Port Adelaide

Vitals has collected so many books this year that books will be replenished at midday so that the early risers aren’t the only ones who get first dibs on some absolutely spiffing things: from Stephen King to Margaret Atwood, cookery books to encyclopaedias of music, and lets not forget the dozens of magazines, comics, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records (Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison anyone?) up for grabs.

This year, Vitals will also welcome writer Clementine Ford to the book fair, who’ll be selling a ‘straight-from-the-top-of-her-dome’ haiku on the topic of their choice. Got someone’s birthday coming up and don’t know what to get them? Want to impress a love interest but are poetically challenged? Come on down to the book fair and buy them a haiku.

It’s all for a good cause too. The book fair is Vitalstatistix Theatre Company’s biggest fundraiser of the year and money raised will go towards the development and presentation of new work. And remember - to keep our planet happy, please bring your own bags.

WHAT:  The Vitals Book, Zine and Crafty Affair (second hand books, art and craft stalls, food, coffee and great company)

WHEN: Sunday, July 18th, 10am-4pm

WHERE: Waterside Worker’s Hall, 11 Nile Street, Port Adelaide

HOW MUCH: Voluntary gold coin donation

MEDIA CONTACT: Olivia Power, 8447 6211 or development@vitalstatistix.com.au
